Centralised Strategic Network Plan (CSNP)

Our electricity transmission network planning process is evolving to ensure network design and investment processes are fit for the future.

The CSNP’s four key principles:

The Pathway to 2030 Holistic Network Design and the recommendations set out in the Network Options Assessment (NOA) were the first steps towards a more centralised, strategic network planning approach that is critical for delivering affordable, clean and secure power, as we journey towards our net zero future.

We’re building on this long-term, strategic approach through the development of a Centralised Strategic Network Plan (CSNP). The CSNP will take a broad, whole energy system view to transforming the pace and scale of our planning.

Our vision for the CSNP

Our vision is to provide an independent, coordinated, and longer-term approach to wider network planning in GB to help meet the government’s net zero ambitions.

The CSNP serves as a network blueprint for the country, mapping demand and optimal locations for onshore and offshore transmission infrastructure to support a decarbonised energy grid.

To ensure our plans are robust and that stakeholders are given a voice from the outset, we are consulting on a series of draft methodologies and outputs. These include the high level principles for the CSNP, centred around the decisions set out in Ofgem’s decision document on the framework for the CSNP, and a refreshed version of our interim network planning approach, known as the transitional CSNP (tCSNP) refresh.

The consultation period ran from 9 December until 5pm on 20 January. To read the publications or for more information on how to respond to the consultation and register for the supporting webinar, please visit our SEP publications and consultations page.
