Gas Market Strategy

Networks for gas and electricity had historically been planned and developed separately. We have adopted a strategic, long-term approach to the market identify whole energy system needs, to ensure that the system can be designed and built efficiently to deliver an affordable, secure and clean energy future for Great Britain.

To outline the future developments needed for the gas market, we produce The Gas Market Roadmap, which sets out actions and projects to facilitate the energy transition, taking into account our Future Energy Scenarios.

Gas Advisory Council

To inform our approach, the Gas Advisory Council (GAC), has been established and ensures the strategic gas market design is based on robust evidence, international best practice, and the needs of and impacts on wider industry.

The GAC provides strategic output on the future of gas markets to ensure they are affordable for consumers and considered across different molecular gases as well as being sustainable.

The council is made up of experts from a wide range of industry groups and trade bodies across gas market value chains, including transport and storage providers, shippers and suppliers, consumers, and experts from trade associations.

Outputs from the GAC will feed into the Gas Market Roadmap, which sets out the actions, projects and plans needed to transition the market and industry arrangements for gas, based on potential future scenarios for a decarbonised energy system.

Gas Market Roadmap (GMR)

The Gas Market Roadmap sets out the key challenges and opportunities facing Great Britain’s gas market, as well as actions and projects that aim to keep gas market arrangements secure, resilient and efficient throughout the energy transition.

Developed through analysis and engagement with industry stakeholders, including the Gas Advisory Council, the roadmap identifies where further work is needed to ensure the gas market continues to support a reliable, clean and affordable energy system. It also considers the future role of the gas sector, providing views and insights on how the market may need to evolve to 2050.
