Great Britain’s energy explained: March
In March, gas was our largest source of generation providing 30.7% of Great Britain’s electricity. Wind came second at 26.2%.
Zero carbon sources accounted for 45% of our electricity, peaking at 88% on 30 March at 10:30am.
On 30 March, electricity was generated at its lowest carbon intensity of 37 gCO2/kWh at 10am. Carbon intensity averaged at 146gCO2/kWh for the month.
The largest share of our gas came from UK and Norwegian gas fields at 71% with Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) imports providing 24% and storage withdrawal 5%.
Distribution networks transported 62% of our gas to homes and businesses. Power stations used 20% to generate electricity.
