The journey of a NESO graduate

Nayan Maske 1

In this blog, Nayan Maske, Data Analyst, outlines her experience on the NESO graduate scheme and some of the highlights.

My journey through this graduate program has been nothing short of incredible. I still vividly remember the first day when a fellow graduate gave us an introduction speech about what we do as NESO and how we would evolve. On that day, my knowledge of Power Systems, Grid, Markets, and how the control room works was minimal. Today, however, it is a completely different story.

I joined the program straight after completing my master's degree at university, making this my first professional opportunity. Reflecting on how this opportunity has transformed my life, I’m grateful for the variety of new experiences and the vast amount of knowledge I've gained. This graduate program has provided me with a clear pathway towards playing a role in delivering a sustainable and decarbonised future in Great Britain.

The game changing structure of our scheme

One of the most remarkable aspects of the program is having three unique placements over 18 months. This structure is a true game-changer, allowing graduates to explore different teams, interact with diverse people, work on varied projects and receive support while gaining hands-on experience. In my first placement I had the exciting opportunity to develop a machine learning model with the innovation team. I’ve also been able to explore how Artificial Intelligence can help optimise how we balance the electricity system. These varied placements encourage us not to be confined to our existing skills but to explore areas where we can contribute and learn new things.

All three of my placements were exceptionally enriching. The Market Framework and Electricity National Control Centre Future Design team were particularly supportive, something I consider myself lucky to have experienced. Throughout this journey, the people I've met have been truly incredible, each playing a significant role in my development within NESO.

Learning from industry experts

I still remember my interview for the program. I was asked why I wanted to join, and having seen numerous videos and news articles, I answered that I wanted the chance to sit with industry experts and learn from them. And that is precisely what happened. I had the opportunity to work with experts in our control room including the National Balancing Engineer, Operational Strategy Manager and the Transmission Strategy Manager.

I have to mention the incredible support I received from colleagues at NESO, their willingness to share knowledge and help whenever needed truly made me feel like a valued member of the team. The guidance they have given me has profoundly impacted my journey, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

There are many individuals who have been in the business for over a decade but never had the opportunity to work in the control room or sit with subject matter experts, meet the Chief Executive of the company to learn more about the function and ask any questions. I consider myself immensely fortunate to have had this unique opportunity. It is here that I received appreciation for my hard work, recognition for my contributions, and always felt like a valued member of the team.

One of the best aspects of this journey has been the exceptional managers I've had the pleasure of working with and my dedicated talent manager. They've ensured I understand my choices, tracked my development, and provided encouragement to ensure I can approach everything I do with confidence.

During this placement, I made truly amazing friends who consistently supported me, building my confidence along the way.

NESO has been exemplary in taking care of mental health and well-being, promoting DEI, and ensuring everyone is treated equally. The graduate program was outstanding, offering a range of placement choices that allowed me to broaden my knowledge and expand my skills.

The experience I have had on the graduate scheme has truly shaped my career and perspective, providing me with invaluable experiences and knowledge. I look forward to continuing this journey, learning more, and contributing to a sustainable and decarbonised future. The graduate program has provided me with a clear pathway, filled with opportunities to learn, collaborate, and contribute. It has been a remarkable journey, and I am grateful for every moment.

In one word, if I answered what this program gave me, I would say confidence. Confidence to stand tall, to speak out boldly, to support others, to ask questions, and to move forward with determination.

I am genuinely excited about my new role as a Regional Energy System Planning Data Analyst and am proud to be part of the mission towards net zero.
