We’ve joined the Renewables Grid Initiative (RGI) to strengthen our relationships with international transmission system operators on our shared journey to decarbonising global energy systems.
Greater collaboration with Non-Government Organisations in the climate and grid space internationally gives us an opportunity to discuss and monitor emerging challenges to achieving net-zero together.
The RGI is a coalition of European NGOs and Transmission System Operators (TSOs) promoting fair, transparent, sustainable grid development to increase the use of renewables and achieve full decarbonisation in line with the threats of climate change as agreed in the Paris Agreement.
RGI membership offers engagement opportunities with the European Commission Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) and the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E). Joining the RGI will facilitate information sharing and dialogue on European policy positions.
We’re delighted to join the Renewables Grid Initiative, which shares our vision of developing reliable, clean and affordable energy – with consideration for communities and ecosystems. We look forward to working closely with this unique community of European TSOs and NGOs as we consider not just our planning within Great Britain, but how we connect with our European neighbours – especially as we facilitate the growth of networks and renewables in the North Sea.
Over the last five years NESO has facilitated the phaseout of coal in the UK in 2024 and is working towards the goals of delivering a zero-carbon operable electricity network in 2025 and a clean power electricity system by 2030. We hope by working with our peers, we can learn from each other and implement best practices that delivers improved outcomes for both Great Britain, and our neighbours across Europe.
In addition to strengthening our relationship with European counterparts, the RGI has a strong emphasis on considering the impact of energy activities on habitats and local communities. Discussing best practices in these forums will provide beneficial insights into the environmental and societal impacts we’re considering in our Strategic Spatial Energy Plan and upcoming Regional Energy System Plans.
