Thousands of students across Great Britain have received their A level and GCSE results this month. So, if you're wondering what comes next, we're here to show that there is more than one route into a career in energy.
At NESO, we believe exam results do not define your future. We operate today’s electricity system and design tomorrow’s energy system. To do that, we need people with different skills, experiences and perspectives.
While science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects are important to the energy sector, not every role at NESO requires a STEM background.
We offer opportunities across: Engineering, Data, digital and technology, Markets and operations, Strategic planning, Communications and Corporate services.
Our Early Careers programmes are built around potential, curiosity and a willingness to learn. Whether you're leaving school, studying at university or looking to start a new career, there are different ways to join us.
Apprenticeships
Our apprenticeship programme is designed for people leaving school or college who want to earn while they learn.
The Trainee Power System Engineer Higher Apprenticeship is a 36-month programme that combines practical experience with formal training. Apprentices help support the operation and future development of Great Britain's electricity system while learning from experienced engineers.
Applications are open now. Places are limited, so we recommend applying early.
Industrial placements
Our 12-month industrial placements help university students apply their learning in a real-world environment.
Starting each July, placement students work on projects that support the transition to a reliable, clean and affordable energy system. Opportunities are available across engineering, business operations, commercial, digital, data and technology.
Students receive support to build their skills, expand their professional networks and gain valuable work experience. High-performing participants may also be considered for our graduate programme.
We expect to begin recruiting in autumn 2026 for our 2027 intake.
Graduate programme
Our award-winning graduate programme is an 18-month rotational scheme for recent graduates and people starting a new career in energy.
Graduates complete three six-month placements across different areas of the business, combining hands-on experience with professional development and formal training.
Opportunities are available in: Power systems engineering, Business operations, Commercial and Digital, data and technology.
Participants may also have the opportunity to work towards professional qualifications or chartership.
We expect to begin recruiting in autumn 2026 for our 2027 intake.
We also offer an EmployAbility Supported Internship for young people aged 16 to 24 who are neurodivergent, disabled, or have additional learning needs and an Education, Health and Care Plan.
The programme provides practical work experience and tailored support to help participants develop confidence, build workplace skills and explore careers in energy.
Our commitment to creating opportunities for people from different backgrounds was recognised at the Institute of Student Employers Awards 2026:
The judges recognised our approach to developing talent, our commitment to equitable career pathways and our work with the wider energy industry through external secondments.
Whatever your results, there is a route for you
As Great Britain's energy system evolves, we'll need engineers and digital specialists alongside analysts, communicators and creative problem-solvers.
Whatever results you received this summer, your next step could help shape Great Britain's energy future.
