Reflecting on Wind Europe 2025

Fintan Slye Wind Europe

This week, we’ve been at the Wind Europe Annual Event in Copenhagen to discuss the future of energy and the importance of collaboration, and innovation to achieve our shared net-zero ambitions with European neighbours.

One of the standout moments was the unveiling of the third joint expert paper from the Offshore TSO Collaboration (OTC) Group. This paper highlights the benefits of collaborating with European transmission system operators on cross-border projects for the grid connection of offshore wind farms in the North Sea, the Irish Sea, and the Celtic Sea.

Our Chief Executive, Fintan Slye, spoke alongside our neighbouring transmission system operators during the publication of the paper and said: “Working together to understand offshore opportunities will enable the development of fully optimised solutions and provides a solid foundation for clear, evidence-based policy decisions across borders.”

The conference also shone a light on the importance of energy security. Our Director of Markets, Rebecca Beresford, emphasised the importance of safeguarding Great Britain’s energy infrastructure from cyber-attacks, sabotage and climate change. With energy security underpinning our economy and daily lives, it's crucial that we continue to prepare our systems for future challenges and maintain our world leading levels of reliability.

European cooperation on energy is vital to maintaining security of supply and lowering energy prices for consumers. By sharing intelligence on threats and best practices to securing assets, together we can mitigate the impact threats have on our energy system.

Attendees were also interested in our world leading efforts to drive toward decarbonisation and affordability. Rebecca took part in a panel discussion to highlight our pioneering reforms to the connection queue and how our Demand Flexibility Service (DFS) has enabled homes and businesses across Great Britain to participate in flexibility, with over 2.6 million participants already reducing electricity use during demand flexibility events.

Our CrowdFlex project is also undertaking consumer flexibility trials to discover the best incentives for encouraging participation in domestic flexibility. In January, we shared the results from the first year of trials.

This year’s Wind Europe has reinforced the message that collaboration, innovation and flexibility are key to unlocking the future potential of our energy systems. By working together, sharing knowledge and embracing new technologies we can drive sustainability, resiliency, and affordability across Europe.
