Great Britain’s energy explained: April
In April, gas was our largest source of generation, providing 26.1% of Great Britain’s electricity. Wind came second at 22.4%.
Great Britain achieved a new maximum solar generation record on 6 April at 13.212GW, just five days after achieving a previous high of 12.57GW. These records played a part in enabling solar to provide 10.5% of our electricity in April.
Zero carbon sources accounted for 46% of our electricity, peaking at 85% on 4 April at 2pm.
The largest share of our gas came from UK and Norwegian gas fields at 82% with both Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) imports and storage withdrawal providing 9%.
Distribution networks transported 52% of our gas to homes and businesses. Power stations used 19% to generate electricity.
